The British Society for Immunology are currently working with the MRC Centre of Research Excellence in Exposome Immunology (how the environment affects our immune system) to recruit a new Patient and Public Involvement Panel. The Centre will explore how environmental exposures cause chronic inflammatory conditions such as asthma and inflammatory bowel disease. The Panel will support the Centre in conducting relevant, suitable and valuable research.

Who they are looking for:

They are seeking members with experience of chronic inflammation of the lungs, gut or skin. This includes but is not limited to conditions such as:

  • Asthma
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis
  • Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS)
  • Psoriasis
  • Eczema

They are also looking for members with experience managing their exposure to pollution.

Members also need to be over 18 and based in the UK, and will need access to the internet, an email address and a device to attend online meetings via Zoom.

Panel members do not need any previous knowledge or experience.

Expected commitment from participants:

  • The Panel will meet online with researchers from the Centre four times a year
  • The first meeting is likely to be held in June 2026
  • The initial term for membership will be three years

Closing date to apply: 29 April 2026

Meetings will be held virtually to enable working with individuals across the UK although researchers are aware this may exclude others. They will refine ways of working with the members once they are recruited including discussing individual needs. They will also be providing honoraria in line with National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) guidelines.
